The recognition, evaluation and control of hazards is the foundation stone of occupational health and safety. If you want to reduce the number and frequency of accidents in the workplace, then you must effectively identify workplace hazards, evaluate the risks these hazards present and implement control measures that will eliminate or control any unacceptable risks.
COURSE AIM
The aim of this training course is to constructively involve the participants in the identification and analysis of workplace hazards and enable them to make recommendations on eliminating or reducing any unacceptable risks presented by these hazards.
SESSION 1. The Course Introduction
The course introduction clearly explains the aim of this course and the reason why the course is being conducted. It also includes an icebreaker called ‘Spot the Hazards’. This icebreaker exercise helps to focus the participants on the recognition of hazards in the workplace.
SESSION 2. Occupational Hazards
This session looks at the definition of the term ‘occupational hazard’ and identifies the four main groups of occupational hazards. It also looks at some common examples of occupational hazards and discusses the health and safety risks associated with these hazards. This session is made meaningful to the participants by addressing physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards that relate directly to the people in the workplace.
SESSION 3. The Recognition, Evaluation and Control of Hazards
This session covers the basic theory of identifying, evaluating and controlling hazards. It looks at several different methods of identifying hazards in the workplace and discusses the fundamentals of hazard evaluation. It also addresses the Hierarchy of Control Measures in detail.
SESSION 4. Preparation for the Practical Exercise
This session prepares the participants for the practical hazard identification and risk analysis exercise. It traces and clearly explains the main steps in the hazard identification and risk analysis process and shows the participants how to complete the hazard worksheets.
SESSION 5. The Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis Exercise
This session involves the participants in a practical hazard identification and risk analysis exercise. This exercise is designed to actively involve everyone in the identification of workplace hazards. It also engages the participants in a personal analysis of the risks associated with these hazards and provides a mechanism to record these hazards and, in turn, notify the organisation about the perceived risks. This, therefore provides the organisation with the opportunity to eliminate, control, or accept these risks. Overall, this exercise improves your safety systems by being proactive and addressing needs which are specific to your workplace.
SESSION 6. Presentations and the Course Review
During this final session the participants make (team) presentations about the hazards they identified and analysed. Any hazard which is deemed as having a high potential for serious injury, illness or disease is highlighted and a process for effectively dealing with this hazard is established. This session provides a good opportunity to improve safety credibility and develop trust. This session concludes with a feedback questionnaire.
