Respiratory hazards exist in every workplace, from bacteria to viruses, aerosols to odours and gases to dust. Exposures to respiratory hazards can cause chronic and acute lung diseases, allergic reactions, irritations, cancers and systemic poisoning of the major organs in the body. COURSE AIM The aim of this training course is to inform the participants about the essential elements of respiratory protection. SESSION 1. The Course Introduction The course introduction clearly explains the aim of the course and the reason why the course is being conducted. It also includes an icebreaker exercise called ‘You’ve got to be Joking!’ SESSION 2. The Respiratory System This session looks at the anatomy of the respiratory system, how the respiratory system works and the ‘natural defence mechanisms’ that are a part of the respiratory system.
SESSION 3. Respiratory Hazards This session looks at the two main groups of respiratory hazards and discusses in detail the main ill health effects of specific respiratory hazards in the workplace. This includes examples of substances that cause irritation, allergic reactions, damage to lung tissue, cancer and systemic poisoning. SESSION 4. Filters This session is an informative session on filters. It is conducted as a series of questions and answers and highlights all of the important aspects of selecting, using and storing filters. SESSION 5. Air Purifying Respirators This session on air purifying respirators is conducted in much the same manner as the previous session, that is, a series of questions and answers. The session explains in detail the main steps required to correctly fit an air purifying respirator and seven factors that can prevent you from achieving a seal. It also describes how to check that you have a proper seal. SESSION 6. How to put on a Respirator and Conduct a Fit Test During this session the participants are required to inspect an air purifying respirator and determine whether or not it is suitable for use with a specified hazards. They must also correctly fit the respirator and conduct a fit test to ensure their mask has no leaks. SESSION 7. The Course Review and Written Questionnaire This session involves the participants in a thorough review of all the information covered in the training course. The session concludes with the participants completing a written questionnaire.
